Henry Hynoski's performance in the New York Giants' 21-17 win over the New England Patriots in Sunday's Super Bowl got some strong reviews on the national level.
Hynoski caught two passes for 19 yards and two first downs, made an important fumble recovery and blocked well from his fullback position.
Former NFL star Mike Golic, on ESPN's Mike and Mike Show on Monday morning, called Hynoski his unsung hero for the game.
"His lead blocking ... the Giants ran 28 times for 114 yards and averaged over four yards a carry ... and this guy paved the road," Golic said. "He was doing a great job lead blocking. Also one of the two fumbles the Giants had, he recovered one of them so they didn't lose possession. He did a great job like a fullback does - you stick your face right into the chest of a linebacker or whoever you're blocking and get them out of the way, and that's what he did."
Jeffrey Eisenband, writing on Yahoo!Sports' ThePostGame., talked about Hynoski's recovery of Hakeem Nicks' fumble:
"With about five minutes left in the third quarter and the Giants trailing 17-12, Hakeem Nicks caught Eli Manning's pass down the middle of the field at the Patriots' 30-yard line. Hynoski trailed the play.
Hynoski let his instincts do the work. As Nicks fought for extra yardage, Jerod Mayo popped the ball out of the receiver's hands. Hynoski darted out from behind the play and propped himself on top of the football.
"Everything's just reaction," said Hynoski, who also had a 13-yard reception to start the Giants' touchdown drive in the first quarter. "You always got to stay on your toes and luckily I was in the right place at the right time, and it proved to be a big play in the game."
On NFL.com, senior analyst Pat Kirwan wrote:
"Back in Week 9, the Giants went up to Foxborough and beat the Patriots 24-20 without Hakeem Nicks, Ahmad Bradshaw and Henry Hynoski. The main reason I picked the Giants to beat the Pats again was that those three men would be playing in this game. Hicks, Bradshaw and Hynoski combined 217 yards and a touchdown on 31 touches.
"Much has been made of the return to health on New York's defensive line, and rightfully so, but these three offensive players made a huge impact on the Super Bowl.
"(Punter Steve) Weatherford is clearly a solid candidate for the Unsung Hero of the Game, but Hynoski and linebacker Chase Blackburn deserve consideration, as well. Hynoski had two receptions for 19 yards (breaking a few tackles in the process), but his real contribution was lead-blocking for Bradshaw and Brandon Jacobs. Hynoski's ability to read the defense and get up on linebackers was impressive. When I talked with Giants All-Pro guard Chris Snee after the game, he couldn't say enough about Hynoski's blocking. And don't forget: The rookie fullback saved the day by recovering a Nicks fumble, eventually leading to a Giant field goal."
And Sports Illustrated's Peter King, writing in his Monday Morning QB column on sportsillustrated.cnn.com, wrote a list of things he liked about the Super Bowl, two of which were:
"e. Henry Hynoski. Sounds like a fullback. Plays like one.
"f. And recovers fumbles like a champ."
