MOUNT CARMEL - What is believed to be a portable methamphetamine lab was found this afternoon in a home at 244 S. Beech St. (not 344 as intitially reported here.) Police cordoned off a one-block area in all directions, and as of 2:15 p.m., were awaiting the arrival of a county hazmat team.
Two residents at that address, Jason Hunsinger, 33, and Kim Metcalf, 30, were taken into custody and will be detained in Columbia County Prison on a probation violation. Charges related to the lab are pending.
The meth lab was discovered on the first floor of the residence around 1:30 p.m. by Columbia County probation officers who came there to serve warrants on Hunsinger and Metcalf. The two had failed to appear for a hearing in Columbia County Court, according to authorities at the scene.
A cat and a dog were also removed from the home. The animals appeared to be in good condition.
Although the property is within two blocks of the east entrance to the Mount Carmel Area Junior-Senior High School, it was not deemed necessary to order a school evacuation.
